Farming the sea
Our story
A Family Tradition
BST Oysters was started by 3 oyster farmers in Cowell, South Australia (Baker, Schutz, Turner) thus the name of the first letter of the founders.
Started in 1989 after the traditional rack method proved unsuitable to our open water conditions the BST Adjustable Long Line System is now copied by many of our competitors.
We trialled many products for the main carrier line before settling on Bayco making use of Uni SA to help with electrolysis problems and then travelled to Germany to secure the Bayer product now used.
We developed the adjustable longline after realising that different heights were a huge advantage. Initially using poly pipe for this adjustability and then we developed risers and basket clips for ease of basket removal and extensively trialed stocking densities for optimal growth & conditioning
Trialled basket shape & settled on the current shape, now injection moulded, for optimum growth & conditioning.
BST has been proactive in passing on the knowledge gleaned, to all growers all over the world & built the business on being a call point for all oyster growing issues.

Cowell's BST Oyster Supplies win National Landcare Award
The Awards, held at Parliament House last night, celebrate the work of volunteers from around Australia who are making a significant contribution to the environment.
Catriona Rowntree hosted the bi-annual Awards in front of 600 guests including The Hon. Tony Burke MP, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and actor Jack Thompson.
The BST Adjustable Longline Oyster Farming System was developed, produced and commercialised by three local oyster growers to suit the rough and weedy conditions in Franklin Harbour. The system is now recognised world-wide as an example of best practice oyster farming and has added to the positive growth of Cowell as well as the development of the aquaculture industry."We're honoured to receive this Award and are proud to be part of Australia's Landcare movement," said Ashley Turner from BST Oyster Supplies.Heather Campbell, CEO Landcare Australia added, "The Awards are a culmination of the ongoing efforts of volunteers across Australia who dedicate their time working to sustain and enhance Australia's natural resources."I congratulate BST Oyster Supplies on this truly remarkable achievement."
